The crash ledger / Table 02

Inside the city limits: the county's cities in 2023.

Crashes, injury crashes and persons injured in St. Charles, St. Peters, O'Fallon, Wentzville, Lake St. Louis and the county's smaller cities, from the Patrol's municipality table.

Key takeaways

  • The city of St. Charles reported the most crashes inside its limits in 2023: 2,035, with 369 injury crashes and 499 persons injured.
  • St. Peters reported 1,518 crashes and the most injury crashes of any city in the county, 376, with 526 persons injured.
  • O'Fallon reported 1,489 crashes, 300 injury crashes and 421 persons injured.
  • The 15 St. Charles County cities in the table add to 7,042 crashes. The county table counts 7,945; the rest happened outside city limits.
  • These are counts of crashes by location, not measures of risk. No population or traffic figures are used here.

Table 17.01 / 2023

Crashes inside city limits, cities with 100 or more

Each bar is one city's reported crashes in 2023, split by worst outcome. The smaller cities are in the table below.

Table 17.01 of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Traffic Safety Compendium does something the county table cannot: it gives each city its own line. For 2023, the latest year the Patrol has published, it carries 15 municipalities in St. Charles County, from the city of St. Charles with 2,035 crashes down to Weldon Spring Heights with 1. This page enters every one of them, ordered by the number of crashes reported inside city limits.

What a city line counts

A municipality line counts crashes that happened inside that city's limits, and nothing else. It is a statement about where the crash happened, not where the drivers live. A city's line includes the state routes and the interstate that run through it, which is why the cities along I-70, Route 364 and Highway K carry the longest lines. Crashes on county roads and highways outside every city limit are on no city line, which is why the 15 lines add to 7,042 and not to the county's 7,945.

Two notes for careful readers. Foristell sits on the Warren County line, and part of the city lies in Warren County, so its 133 crashes may include some the county table places in Warren County. And the table has no line for Portage des Sioux or Augusta, so this page prints none for them rather than inventing a zero.

Reading the big three

St. Charles, St. Peters and O'Fallon each reported more than 1,400 crashes inside their limits. Between them they account for 5,042 crashes, 63.5% of the county total. Wentzville reported 843 and Lake St. Louis 538.

Injury crashes do not follow total crashes in lockstep. St. Peters reported fewer crashes than St. Charles but more injury crashes, 376 to 369, and more persons injured, 526 to 499. In O'Fallon, 300 injury crashes left 421 people injured. The gap between those two columns is arithmetic, not mystery: one injury crash can hurt a driver and two passengers, and each person hurt is counted once in the persons injured column.

None of this is a ranking of risk. A city with a busy interstate interchange will carry a heavy line however carefully its own residents drive, and this page has no population or traffic source to adjust for that.

The smaller cities

Cottleville (149), Weldon Spring (137), Foristell (133) and Dardenne Prairie (108) each reported more than 100 crashes. West Alton, near the confluence of the Missouri and the Mississippi, reported 62. New Melle, St. Paul, Flint Hill, Josephville and Weldon Spring Heights reported 30 between them. Small lines are still real lines: every one of those crashes had a driver who went home and woke up the next day.

Where the county's office sits

Missouri Injury Clinic's county office is at 2163 West Terra Lane in O'Fallon, which the clinic lists as its Lake St. Louis office. That is a fact about where the office is, not a claim about these numbers. The desk mentions it because readers in St. Peters, Wentzville, Lake St. Louis and Dardenne Prairie ask which office is the short drive, and for most of the county it is this one. Hazelwood and Tesson Ferry are the other two; Offices and hours has the phones and the daily 12 to 2 closure.

If your crash is on one of these lines

You do not need to know which line your crash landed on to get examined. Inside O'Fallon's limits or on a county road between towns, the injury is the same injury, and soft-tissue pain often posts a day or two after the report is written. Get examined this week, bring the report number if you have one, and say it was a crash when you call.

The one entry that matters

Get examined this week at the O'Fallon office

Say it was a crash when you call. The office is at 2163 West Terra Lane, O'Fallon. Closed daily 12 to 2.

This entry is educational and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. It is not legal advice. The crash figures are counts reported to the Missouri State Highway Patrol and say nothing about any clinic, doctor, or office.

The bright line

Chest pain, a sudden severe headache, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, a loss of bowel or bladder control, or a head injury with vomiting or worsening confusion is an emergency room trip right now, not a call to a clinic. Call 911. An injury clinic is built for planned care, and a clinic that sends you to the emergency room instead of booking you is the system working.
